When I started in this profession, armed with an engineering degree from Princeton and an MBA from Harvard, I believed that managing investments for individuals would be simple. Over the last thirty eight years, I have learned that it is not.
My journey started in 1982 at JPMorgan’s Private Bank as an advisor to wealthy Europeans (I lived in Florence, Italy during my college years so I was familiar with the languages and cultures). I quickly learned the importance of helping clients express their financial needs and concerns. My career at JPMorgan provided me with diverse learning opportunities: creating the mutual fund business, launching emerging markets investment vehicles, and managing portfolio managers. With a promotion to Managing Director came responsibility for all investment product development and a greater understanding of how firms earn fees. Realizing that investment theory needed to be adapted to the issues of individual investors, I established and led the Advice Lab, an applied R&D team working with clients to solve complex private wealth issues. Our work led to a number of innovations, a U.S. patent, published articles and JPMorgan’s first internet based service.
After twenty three years at JPMorgan, I transitioned to Bank of America/US Trust to lead investment advice for wealthy families. I deepened my knowledge of global financial markets at HSBC and a multi-family office. In 2010, I joined Citi Private Bank to head the Investment Lab where we developed state-of-the-art techniques for assessing risks.
Joining HTG three years ago was the perfect capstone to my career – an ideal-sized firm focused on helping families invest well. While working with a diverse group of clients, I specialize in leveraging my own experience in helping corporate executives and their families navigate their career transitions.
Weston, CT, is our home, where my wife and I enjoy travel and family time with our three grown children. My hobby is teaching MBA students the complexity of managing wealth as Adjunct Professor of Finance at NYU’s Stern School of Business.
