My road to HTG was not direct, but then again, it’s all about the journey. Growing up in Savannah, Georgia, I knew little about investing, much less the role of a financial advisor. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in accounting, I had no idea my first job out of college would launch me on my way. I started my career as an auditor at Price Waterhouse in Atlanta. Honestly, I never enjoyed the life of an auditor; however, I did learn to read and understand financial statements – a skill that would become my foundation for a career in investment management.
In the summer of 1988, I needed a change, both professionally and geographically. At the urging of my brother who had moved to New York City a few years earlier, I left Price Waterhouse, packed three bags, and boarded a plane. I told myself I would stay only two years; little did I know I would never return to the south. Despite the lack of accessible golf courses, I loved New York. The city brought me out of my shell and opened me to the world of finance and investing. I spent eight years at Lehman Brothers where I gained an interest in investment management and capital markets. Lehman agreed to sponsor me for the Executive MBA program at Columbia University. After two years of working full time and going to school, in 1996 I earned my MBA in Finance. More importantly, during that time, I met and married my wife of 27 years (and counting).
I began developing my investment skills as an equity research analyst at Lehman which led to a twenty-plus year career investing in small cap value stocks for institutional and high net-worth clients. During that time, my wife joined HTG Investment Advisors as a financial advisor. I had a front-row seat watching her build relationships with her clients and make a difference in their lives. The satisfaction she received helping clients plan and achieve their long-term goals was inspirational. I also got to know the firm, its founders, and financial advisors. The firm’s passion for its clients, collegial culture, and favor for small-cap value investing resonated with me.
I have always invested with a long-term view and enjoy helping clients stay disciplined during volatile markets.
I used to say, “If I could go back and restart my career, I would choose wealth management.” Well, I did not exactly restart my career, but when Lex and Robin said they might be looking for a new financial advisor who had experience with investments and capital markets, I jumped at the opportunity. I feel I bring a complementary skill set to HTG and look forward to leveraging my experience to help HTG grow and service its clients.
My wife and I live in New Canaan, CT, where we raised our three sons. Our two oldest are now pursuing their own careers. Our youngest continues to follow his hockey passion. When I am not in the ice rink watching him play, you can find me relaxing with my family and our Bernese Mountain Dog, Wilson. And yes, there is the occasional trip to the golf course!
